Part One: Conservatism Vs Liberalsim

What is Conservatism?
Humans like security. We like to have a community that we are comfortable in. We like to be around things that are familiar to us. Conservative people don’t like change. They don’t want their community to change or things that were once familiar such as a CD player to change into something more complicated like an iPod. Another example of this took place in the 1800’s after Napoleon was defeated.

In 1814 the Congress of Vienna took place in Vienna, Australia. This meeting was when Britain, Prussia, Australia, and Russia came together and wanted to make an agreement to establish peace in Europe after the war. The conference was the start of conservatives holding back the liberal and nationalist thoughts that were unleashed by the French revolution. Not all conservatives believed in the same things, but some common beliefs were: people must obey the political officers/ Crown, society must be under control and they did not easily accept liberal demands for civil liberties.

Edmund Burke is an interesting example of this because he believed in some liberal causes but also had strong opinions about how politics should be run. Burke was known for being a supporter of American independence and against special privileges for royalty. It came as a great surprise when in 1790 he wrote Reflections on the Revolution in France. His book talked about how the French Revolution brought rebellion from the Crown and that without the structure it provided disaster would take place. This started his career as the spokesman of European conservatives. The uproar caused triumphs and grievances for Burke. The people that he once sided with such as Thomas Jefferson and Charles James Fox now shunned him and declared him “an enemy of democracy”.

Now you might ask, why does conservatism relate to liberalism? Liberalism is the exact opposite of conservatism. Liberal beliefs include individual rights, society based on freedom of thought, limitations on government and religious power and the rule of law. Capitalism and liberalism are closely related. One main point in capitalism is the idea of privately owned businesses rather than a government to have power over the economy. As you can imagine this is not what the conservatives wanted. They wanted the government to have most of the control.

hiya bannani!
My topic is british parliament, and one of the most interesting things about it is the fact that it is a combanation of both conservatism and liberalism. up until the begging of the 18th century, britain had a house of parliament, though the queen of king of the time period, made most of the decisions. in a nutshell, parliament decided it was time that the people got a say in what went on in their government so they elected a prime minister by the name of robert walpole. this man knew how important it was that commoners and lords alike were able to make decisions in their government. there are two hoses in parliament; the house of lords and the house of commons. the names say it all, one house has elected dukes, earls and any other guy with some fancy title. the other house (the house of commons) is made up of orediunary people (or "commoners") and actually has more power now then the house of lords, but that shift wasn't until much later. kind of interesting how two so different ideas, like conservatism and liberalism, can be combined into one government system huh?
btw, sorry my comment is so long!

Hey Annizzel!!

So I agree with what you said. The Enlightenment had a lot to do with the church. Like you mentioned part of the enlightenment was about moving away from the ideas that the church was saying and thinking more logically and more natural for example: instead of saying the the apple fell because god made it fall like the church would say, in the enlightenment if would be more along the lines of, so how did the apple fall? hmmm? well there must be force soon after recognized by Issaz Newton called Gravity.

ok. so. I also found in my research that Enlightenment thinking became more popular and people started seperating from the church.

Cya
sorry its so confusing!

Hello Conservatism Vs Liberalism,

My topic is Florence Nightingale, who was a woman who revolutionized nursing in the 1800s. In connection with conservatism versus liberalism, Ms. Nightingale would have been considered the Liberal party. She dedicated her life to integrating women nurses, like herself, into predominantly male hospitals across Europe. The doctors, who were employed in the different hospitals in which Ms. Nightingale worked, represented the conservative party. The majority of doctors initially did not approve of women in their workplace because they believed Ms. Nightingale and the other women would be in the way and relatively useless. The doctors did not like the change therefore making Florence Nightingale’s work even more difficult.

Hi!
From what I've gathered from your post, Liberalism is a little bit about the people having power, and the upper class not getting special rights. When Abbe Emmanuel Sieyes wrote What Is the Third Estate, he wanted the Third Estate (or bourgeois,) which at one point was ninety-eight percent of the French, to have an equal say in the government. The Third Estate took care of the private labor that sustained the society. However, the public functions were controlled by the upper class. Only the upper class had occupations that were of honor.

For the past term I have been looking at the impacts of advanced weaponry on the Early Modern Period. Reading your blog, I was amazed to see how weaponry played such a substantial role in the political development of Europe. Napoleon was a major military leader, and after his defeat the politics of Europe completely changed. I discovered that weapons played a large role in who had power in the Early Modern Period.
Cannons could destroy entire cities. Therefore, within countries smaller principalities that did not have the money to rebuild after their destruction would be absorbed by bigger domains that could rebuild. This centralized countries’ governments quite a bit.
Weapons also allowed countries to take over one another. The more land a country had, the more power it had simply because of its population. This helped bigger countries gain more political power.
As in the case of Napoleon and many others, their battle success awarded them political power. Being safe and protected was important to many people, so often they would listen to those like Napoleon, more than their parliament or other elected leaders. Therefore, when Napoleon was defeated, it makes perfect sense that there were political shifts. I find it interesting how throughout time, weapons have had such a major role in the power dynamics of people and countries. Even today, many people feel that a president needs to have a strong military background in order to be competent.

Hi!
Impressionism is a lot like conservatism vs. liberalism. The art critics of the Impressionist time period were against change in the art world, similar to the view of conservatives. Impressionist painters, however, simply wanted freedom of expression, just as those liberal desired freedom of thought and rights for the individual. For both your subject and mine, there are two groups, each wanting the opposite of the other, and willing to fight for their belief until the end.
